4. Volunteer to Help Locals
It’s important to note that you’re not necessarily a more responsible traveler just because you choose to volunteer, but if you do decide to help the locals in any way, they’ll sure appreciate it. It’s also a great way to observe the day-to-day lives of locals and really understand the issues they’re facing.
Just remember that “voluntourism” is becoming a business like any other – hungry for profit – and you might end up causing more harm than good. Many children in orphanages struggle with the constant change of volunteers and have difficulties creating deeper emotional bonds. So, do your homework and find a place where you can make a difference.
