7. Salads

Salads nowadays go way beyond leafy greens and tomatoes. With a bit of imagination, you can create a salad in less than 20 minutes, which will keep you filled up throughout the day, and is as nutritious as any other meal.

The idea here is to think outside the box. What you’re looking for apart from the classic tomato, lettuce, olive, and beets is to add some roasted vegetables, cheese (feta or grilled halloumi), avocado, couscous, or quinoa and bulgar wheat.

8. Rice dishes

Did you know many hostels have rice cookers available for you to use? Especially in Asia? Even without them, it’s super easy, so there’s no excuse for you not to cook rice! And again, you have an incredible number of rice dish recipes.

The easiest is probably egg fried rice, which you can make more interesting by adding vegetables and/or meat. Another option is to cook a risotto or even risotto balls, though it might take slightly longer to prepare.

While not all hostels have ovens for you to bake wonderful food in, nearly all of them have microwaves for you to heat your meals. However, did you know you can actually cook many different types of dishes in a microwave?
