Developing countries tend to be the perfect example of the real, raw world. For those people who live in a safe, organized, wealthy town in a first-world country, rural Myanmar or the violence in South America can be a stark shock. You’re used to thinking that the distressing news you glance at for 15 minutes while eating breakfast is someone else’s daily battle.
If anything, you come back with a more compassionate heart. For those who spend time volunteering abroad, you truly put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. When you understand how lucky you are, you might start helping your community in some way and making sure you’re aware of the hardships of friends and neighbors.
