12 Places to Travel to This Holiday Season

10. Mauritius

If you’re looking for an unspoiled paradise this holiday season, head to Mauritius. It’s an island nation near Madagascar that’s managed to rise in popularity with tourists without giving in to massive corporate hotel chains.

Most of the island’s accommodations are small boutique hotels and resorts. All of their beaches are public, but if you don’t find a beach that suits you, take a boat to the nearby islands Ile aux Cerfs, or Ilot Mangenie for an even quieter afternoon away from the crowds. If you want to dress up for an evening out, there are plenty of boutiques in Grand Baie or Terre Rouge where you can shop till you drop.

11. Lapland

If you’ve ever wanted to live out your most festive Christmas fantasy, you need to buy a ticket to Lapland today. Lapland is a province in northern Finland, and every year people from around the world are drawn to their Santa Claus Village – a theme park centered around Santa Claus!

When you arrive, you can choose between activities like meeting Santa Claus, touring the post office where he receives his mail, or exploring an underground cave called the Santa Park. You can stay in the Santa Claus Village in a tiny cottage, or spring for a night in a hotel made of glass, so you can watch the northern lights dance overhead.

12. Guatemala

Another place that boasts both beautiful weather and festive Christmas traditions is Guatemala. Just south of Mexico, Guatemala most often attracts trekkers and other outdoor enthusiasts as the country is full of jungles, volcanic rock formations, and amazing coastal beaches.

If you’re there over Christmas, make sure that you’re ready to party. Cities regularly host parades and festivals in the days leading up to Christmas, and the festivities culminate in a massive fireworks display at midnight on Christmas.
