2. Funerary Beads
In 2000, a law was passed in South Korea that required families to exhume their dead after 60 years to make way for new occupants in the cemetery. This was meant to save on space, but as a result, has completely transformed the way that South Koreans treat the remains of their loved ones. Burials are down almost 50 percent, and instead, families are opting to cremate their loved ones and are using the ashes to make beautiful colored beads. The beads are then put into a decorative container, and are displayed prominently to honor the deceased.
