Known as the “Dominican Chernobyl,” Bajos De Haina in the Dominican Republic was once home to a battery factory and its gorgeous beaches are now polluted with lead. Sadly, many residents have been found to be suffering from a number of related illnesses, including seizures, learning disabilities and brain damage. The site was declared a “hotpot” by the Dominican government and is thought to be home to the highest concentration of lead contamination in the world.
