4. Villisca Axe Murder House – Villisca, Iowa
The horrific murder of Josiah B. Moore, his wife and 4 children, and 2 girls who were staying in the house as overnight guests, occurred on June 10, 1912. The axe-wielding murderer was never found or identified.
The house was restored back to its original condition in 1994, and its current design has neither plumbing nor electricity. Tours led by lamplight add to the ambience, and visitors have reported visions of an axe-wielding man, the sound of children crying, and other unexplained paranormal activity.
