2. Houska Castle

Unlike most castles which are built to keep out invaders, Houska Castle in the Czech Republic with its strange location and lack of fortification appears to have been built to keep something in. According to legend, the castle was built over a bottomless pit known as “The Gateway to Hell.” Dark winged creatures were said to have emerged from the hole and the demonic activity was so strong the castle was constructed to contain it.

If that’s not creepy enough, Hitler’s interest in the occult led the Nazis to take over the fort in the 1930s and later renovations uncovered the skeletons of several Nazi officers who appeared to have been executed there.
