9 Viennese Places Where Beethoven Would Take You

3. Haus der Musik

Walking along the Schwarzenbergstrasse Streeet, to the Seilerstätte/Krugerstrasse corner, and then following Seilerstätte, we’ll encounter Haus der Musik (House of Music) in no time. Inaugurated in 2000, this is the first museum of sounds in the world.

House of Music is located in the old town, in the Erzherzog Carl Palace, where, Otto Nicolai (who founded the Philharmonic Vienna -Wiener Philharmoniker) has lived 150 years ago. On the first floor of the building, the Philharmonic’s Museum is silently waiting for us.

Haus der Musik was awarded with the Austrian Museum Prize, a prize of 35,000 Euros, which is given every 2 years by the Ministry of Culture and Arts.

In this museum, we are carefully introduced to the amazing world of music – we’ll take a charming trip from the first sounds created by human beings and up to nowadays’ complex and diverse rhythms. Four Austrian universities, two foreign institutes, musicians and music scholars, architects, students, sound technicians, multimedia artists, and many other people and institutions have been part of this place’s development.

Along its four floors, we can hear fascinating sounds, from the simplest to the most futuristic ones. Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Strauss, Mahler and, of course, Beethoven will be present throughout our visit. Also, we’ll be able to see a map of the city which shows us how often Beethoven changed his homes in Vienna.
