Go Before It’s Gone: The Top Ten Last-Chance Tourist Destinations
5. Madagascar
Might want to send your kids away from the room before you read this one out loud. While we all love Disney’s Madagascar flick about a diverse group of heroic lemurs, the real story about the island of Madagascar might not have quite the beautiful ending as the animated movie. Around 60 species of lemurs occupy the island, including the largest lemur in the world, the Indri. Sadly though, these beautiful creatures will eventually be wiped out, along with the forests of Madagascar, due to slash-and-burn farming, as well as logging.
Eighty percent of the forest has already been destroyed, which not only includes the lemurs and trees, but also additional species with the area, where 80 percent of all Madagascar wildlife is endemic. This means that unless something is done, these species will disappear from the earth entirely in the next three to four decades.
