Externsteine
This area was known as a Saxon stronghold before Charlemagne conquered the region and brought an end to the pagan religion practiced by the local people. Externsteine is a series of small, man-made grottos that were built by the local people among unique sandstone rock formations.
For years historians tried to figure out whether or not religious or cultural rituals took place in these grottos, but were unable to find any evidence. Many Germans during Nazi rule were interested in Externsteine as a place where Saxon history was made, claiming it as historically significant for the white nationalist movement.
