gantija – Malta

Aside from being a highly underrated vacation spot, Malta is home to some of the oldest ruins on the planet, portions of which date all the way back to 3600 BC. The Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra on the Maltese island of Gozo consist of two limestone temples, which archaeologists believed were built for ritual sacrifices due to the animal remains and other clues that have been discovered there.

The name of the temple is derived from the Maltese word ġgant, which means giant. According to local legend, the temples were built by a race of giants who once roamed the island.
