Les Invalides – Paris, France
One of the most spectacular buildings in Paris is Les Invalides, also known as the Hôtel National des Invalides or the National Residence of the Invalids. It was originally a hospital and rehabilitation center for French soldiers, before being turned in a museum in 1905. There are still a small number of elderly soldiers who live there.
Les Invalides contains a few separate museums, like the Artillery Museum and the Historical Museum of the Armies, which were brought together under one roof in the late 19th century. Entrance to the museum costs $15. Most notably, the building’s trademark golden dome contains the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte.
