5. The Great Synagogue, Budapest, Hungary
The Great Synagogue is one of the largest Jewish houses of worship in the world, constructed in 1859. It is a beautiful blend of Moorish and Romantic architecture and it contains the Hungarian Jewish Museum inside as well as a Holocaust Memorial Room. There is also a Jewish Cemetery outside the synagogue, where 2,000 people who died in the Jewish ghettos in the winter of 1944-45 are buried.
Even if you don’t follow the religion, visiting these sacred sites is an awe-inspiring experience. Built with incredible amounts of time, resources, skill and artistry, these beautiful buildings are truly impressive to behold.
