10 Reasons Trump’s Energy Plan Poses Major Climate Threats
It could affect other countries’ desire and ability to fight climate change
In December 2015, representatives from 195 countries signed a treaty known as the Paris Agreement, vowing to begin reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Donald Trump has promised to back out of this agreement if elected and misrepresented it as giving “foreign bureaucrats control over how much energy we use on our land,” despite the fact that the agreement is merely a voluntary pledge that no government or organization can control or enforce. Trump has also pledged to “stop all payment of U.S. tax dollars to global warming programs.”
Should Donald Trump pull the U.S. out of the Paris agreement and cut international funding to fight climate change, many are concerned that it would not only cause mistrust amongst our allies, it could lead to other big polluter countries like China to also abandon their efforts to reduce emissions. It would also mean that poorer countries like India, which rely on financial support from prosperous countries like the U.S. to reduce emissions, would be unable to follow through with the agreement.
