Although the term moonshine typically brings to mind cartoon bottles with X’s on the front, the illegal distilling of alcohol, often termed “moonshine” has become both widespread and dangerous throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Chang’aa, literally meaning “kill me quick,” is a potent illegal alcohol produced in the slums of Nairobi where $1 will get you four glasses. Blindness and death are common risks associated with the consumption of this type of alcohol. As if that wasn’t scary enough, chang’aa is often spiked with jet fuel or embalming fluid to increase its alcoholic effects.
