12 Things Only Travellers Will Understand

You probably remember the first time you traveled. Maybe it was a vague memory of your parents or relatives taking you to a new place. It was exciting! You might have tasted different foods, seen the sea for the first time, or even rode a horse. You were sure you wanted to do it again!

Without realizing it, you were hooked. Family trips turned to road trips with friends or romantic getaways with your partner. Soon you were setting off on your own and traveling became part of your life!

Throughout your journeys, there were unforgettable moments, transformations, or deep thoughts. Check out the following list and see if you can identify any from your own travels.

1. When you manage to communicate with someone in another language

You know when you decide to head deep off the beaten track you’ll find the authenticity you’re looking for. You also know the locals probably don’t speak your language and there’ll be a language barrier. But everything will turn out OK!

Whether you learn the basics of the local language or not, it doesn’t matter, smiles and hand gestures go a long way. The few words you remember make the locals laugh out loud and before you know it, someone is helping you get where you wanted.

2. The excitement of arriving at your dream destination

You might have had a picture of Angkor Wat or the Eiffel Tower on your wall throughout your teenage years. Maybe you’ve watched Into the Wild or read Shantaram, and always dreamed of visiting exotic places. Then one day you actually did it!

Was it what you expected? Did all the stories you knew about the place come true? There’s nothing like visiting the place you fantasized of for so long. You feel like a kid, paying attention to every little detail, taking it all in.

3. How planning a trip can be as thrilling as the trip itself

Some travelers don’t plan too much, but others think it’s part of the whole journey. They might read all the books and watch all the films so they can feel inspired and decide exactly what they want to do.

It’s almost like traveling before traveling — your mind is already there just waiting for your body to arrive. Usually, the more you learn about a new place, its history and culture, the more you fall in love and you just can’t wait to get there!
