5. Matthew Henson

Many people might not know the story of Matthew Henson, but he was the first African-American Arctic explorer. In 1909, he reached the North Pole with Robert Peary, although some dispute this claim.

When he was 12 years old, he became a cabin boy on a ship, but eventually worked his way to becoming a first man. He was known to trade with the Inuit and speak their language. He was invited to join The Explorers Club in 1937.
