11. Carrot – Iran/Afghanistan

This ubiquitous root vegetable has its roots in Iran and Afghanistan. However, when carrots were first cultivated (nearly 3000 BCE), humans were more interested in their scented leaves than the roots.

The Moors took it to Spain in the 8th century and by the 10th century, it had spread to the rest of Europe and West Asia. It took another 400 years to reach China and another 400 to get to Japan!
