12. Manioc (cassava) – South America

Although manioc was first cultivated in Brazil some 10,000 years ago, it quickly spread through South America and went all the way to the Maya civilization. In the 16th century, possibly during the slave trade, the Portuguese took it to Africa.

Manioc is extremely tolerant to droughts and adapted well in Africa and South America. It’s now the third largest source of carbohydrates in the tropical countries behind maize and rice. Nigeria is now the biggest producer in the world.
