5. Eggplant – Asia

Eggplants were first cultivated in Asia (mainly in the south and east) and slowly made its way to the west. It’s thought that the Arabs brought it to Europe across the Mediterranean, but the first mention of it in England only happened in the 16th century.

For a long time, eggplants were believed to be poisonous as it’s part of the same family as nightshades. The European cultivars were small, white and round, and looked like hen’s eggs – that’s how they got their name!
