6. Papaya – Central and South America

Papaya is originally from Mexico, but it spread throughout South America and the Caribbean. The fruit is extremely sensitive to cold weather and therefore it’s mainly produced in tropical countries.

India is now the biggest producer, followed by Brazil and Indonesia. Unripe papayas are commonly used in salads in Southeast Asia and in preserves in Brazil. As the seeds have a strong and spicy taste, it’s sometimes used as a replacement for black pepper.
