9. Watermelon – Africa
When you look at those crazy square watermelons produced in Japan, it’s easy to think it’s an Asian fruit. It isn’t though, it’s actually native to the south of Africa where you can find different varieties, including bitter watermelons.
China is now the biggest producer (over two-thirds of the world’s output) followed by Turkey and Iran. However, it adapted well to the Americas and it’s also largely produced in Brazil and the USA. Fun fact: you can also make alcoholic beverages with watermelons!
