The gorgeous islands of Hawaii were created through volcanic activity, and the islands’ volcanoes have always been central to local mythology and religious practice. The Hawaiian goddess Pele is thought to be an embodiment of the five large Hawaiian volcanoes.

Kīlauea isn’t the largest of the five (that honor goes to Mauna Loa), but it is the only one that has been continuously erupting since 1983. The slopes of Kilauea are full of beautiful plants and exotic wildlife that can be found nowhere else on Earth, which the government of Hawaii has protected through the National Parks Service since 1916.
