Why did the Antonov An-225 make our coolest cargo plane list? You wouldn’t be asking that question if you watched this technical marvel take-off. I mean, how cool is that?!

The Antonov An-225 is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was designed in the 1980s in Ukraine (while Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union). It has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in operational service and, to this day, it remains the heaviest aircraft ever built!

Antonov only built one of these babies, but all 640 tonnes of this monstrosity are still in service today! The Antonov An-225 also holds the world record for an airlifted single-item payload of 189,980 kilograms.
