Balut
If you’ve seen Survivor before, you may have already heard of balut, which are used frequently in the eating challenges. Balut are fertilized duck eggs that are harvested when the embryo is anywhere from 5-21 days old, and eaten after being boiled in salted water. Eating balut is controversial because of the growing embryo inside.
They are a traditional delicacy in places like Vietnam, the Philippines, and China, where men will often eat them with embryos that are quite advanced in age in order to prove their masculinity. They are served in a variety of ways. They can be eaten plain, or served with toppings like lime juice, pepper, and vinegar.
