13. Up Helly Aa Fire Festival – Lerwick, Scotland
Annually, on the last Tuesday of January, Lerwick, Scotland is ablaze. Since 1880, the people of the town come out to celebrate the end of yule and show their spirit at the annual Up Helly Aa Fire Festival. Participants are part of a committee that wear costumes and march through town with lit torches, which are thrown into a Viking ship at the end of the route. The committee then visits local venues to perform skits, sing, and dance. There are several locations where the fire festival takes place and many private parties are held around towns, as well.
