15. Cooper Hill’s Cheese Rolling Festival – Gloucester, England

During, the Spring Bank Holiday in Gloucester, England, things get a little crazy at Cooper’s Hill. The hill is home to the Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, a race in which participants chase a nine pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down the steep 295-foot hill. It is said that the wheel of cheese can reach speeds of 70 miles per hour. The origin of the event isn’t clear, but theories are that it was held as way to determine grazing rights or that the rolling represents bringing in the New Year after winter.
