The Taiwan Lantern Festival takes place in Pingxi each year in either February or early March. The event signifies the end of the Chinese New Year, but also has a more traditional meaning as well. Part of the celebration includes fireworks, which is a way of the people warding off evil and disease from the city and then the lanterns are released as a sign that the town is safe and also to send their wishes to the gods. Lantern bearers draw or write their wishes on the lanterns and attend releasing ceremonies. It is a stunning site for visitors, seeing the sky lit up with hundreds of lanterns.
