The ol’ Goat Eye Scenario
One of my parents’ favorite stories when I was a picky child was about a western boy traveling with his father in the east. At a feast of honor, he was presented with the greatest of delicacies: a goat eye. To honor his host, the boy ate it with a straight face.
Wherever you travel, but especially in areas big on hospitality, it’s important that both you and your companion be ready to observe cultural norms. Sometimes, they might seem gross, but if you’re given cow intestines at a Uighur dinner, you eat them.
It all comes back to the question. What’s more important – your preferences or your hosts’ feelings? You can get a sense of this before you leave by hosting your friend and by observing how they treat hosts that are strangers.
