3 Ways to Fall in Love With Dublin
3. Pub Crawl
Dublin—well, all of Ireland, really—is famous for its pubs. I maintain that the pubs in Galway are better (especially if you take to the winding backstreets to find a local one), but the ones in Dublin do pretty well.
Most hostels (and probably many other sorts of accommodation) can set you up with a guided pub crawl. Sandeman’s actually offers one for €12 (I believe you get a discount if you also go on a walking tour). The benefit of going with an official group is that you’ll receive discounts on drinks, free entrance to clubs, and have a guide to make sure you hit the best spots.
Yearning for a quieter scene? So was I. Consider searching for pubs before you go to find one that would fit your needs. Then spend an evening listening to trad music (traditional Irish music) and talking to the locals.
If somehow the books or the tours haven’t wooed you, I defy your heart to stay strong when an old gent softly sings The Wind That Shakes the Barley. And when the silent solemnness has passed, they’ll be on to a jig that makes your feet bounce, so fast you’ll have emotional whiplash.
And that, my friends, may be the best part of Dublin.
