5 Ways to Sleep in a Party Hostel
5. Use Signals to Communicate
During the night, if someone comes into the room and you’re trying to sleep, just let them know Turn over and sigh. Make it clear that you are attempting to snooze. Tug your hoodie lower over your face, etc. (If you’re more outgoing, you can say, “Trying to sleep here, thanks.” But signals cross cultures pretty well, even if language doesn’t.)
Often (in my experience, at least) hostel-stayers are fairly kind. This may stem from the knowledge that you have equal power to make the other miserable, but it’s a form of kindness nonetheless. I’ve had people walk in the room practically shouting while they turned on all the lights, but as soon as they noticed me sleeping they apologized and shut everything off again.
By being thoughtful yourself (like having your stuff gathered together, not keeping your reading light on late, or taking care not to slam the bathroom door), you’ll also avoid starting a roommate war of light and loudness. Be polite, and often you’ll be rewarded with sweet, lovely sleep.
A few hours of it, anyway.
