5 Ways to Turn Cabbies Into Tour Guides
| April 22, 2016
5. Cabbies Vary
As with everything, the cabby you get will determine how good a guide he is (or even if he’s willing to be one at all).
I don’t mean to generalize, but my Welsh, Irish, Scottish and Turkish cabbies have almost always been bubbling with friendliness, quick to brag about their area of the world and happy to exchange all manner of information. I’ve had less luck with the straight-up British cabbies, and not very much luck with American ones.
It depends on the person. Some cabbies just don’t want to talk. I respect that. If my bright greeting and pleasantries land me nowhere, I let it drop. It’s cool.
But I’ve never regretted the times when a gentle nudge turned a formal driver into a fast friend. You won’t regret it, either.
