How to Travel Like a Writer
5.Look for Local Books
There’s a reason why writers love physical bookstores — and it’s not just about the smell or the quiet environment (though that’s nice, too!).
When you’re browsing for books, sometimes it’s just plain easier to find what you want in a bookstore. Often you don’t even know you were looking for it until you see it on the shelf!
I’ve found this to be particularly true while I’m on the road. It sounds simple, but it’s true: The best place to find Welsh mythology books is in Wales. The best place to find floorplans of the Doge’s palace is in Venice. The best place to find Icelandic seafaring proverbs is in Iceland.
When you go to the source, you’ll find more sources — many of which might be inaccessible from your home country. (Don’t get me started about the pitiful history section in most Barnes and Noble stores.)
So carve out time in your trip to pop into used and new bookstores. You’re a writer, so it’s not going to be that much of a hardship!
With these tips, you’re ready for your next writing adventure.
