7 Tips for Having an Awesome Songkran (The World’s Biggest Water Festival)

6. Don’t drink open water bottles

Water bottles are saved for weeks by Thais around Songkran to fill with recycled water and sell to water fighters. Absolutely do NOT buy and drink the water on the street. It’s easy to notice, as the Songkran water for throwing will have been opened, and is likely slightly crinkled or dented.

This isn’t a mistake that you want to make. A friend arrived on the first day of Songkran, and bought what he thought was super cheap water from a street vendor. He had never participated in the water fight, and didn’t know about the recycling. Fast forward a few hours, and he’s vomiting violently with food-poisoning style sickness for the whole night, and the only thing he had was the street water.
