This may seem obvious but with the overwhelming level of dependence we seem to have on our smartphones these days, the thought that there may be a place in the world without internet access rarely crosses our minds. Paper maps and tour books are an absolute must when traveling without a tour group. A map can be a huge help when asking for directions with a language barrier as streets and places will be in the local language and you can easily point instead of trying to remember that “Italian for Beginners” course you took in high school.
