Sungnyung
The creation of this dish allows people to have a delicious meal and a hot beverage all in one. Sungnyung is a tea made from nurungji, the crackly crust at the bottom of a pot of over-cooked rice. To make this comforting drink, a person would need to heat a pot of rice about ten minutes past cooked and scrape the regularly cooked rice out into a bowl. This can be eaten, while you steep the nurungji in hot water for several minutes, which results in a drink that’s subtly sweet and comforting and is also thought to help aid digestion. Sungnyung has decreased in popularity since the advent of electric rice cookers, which don’t leave nurungji on the bottom of the pot, but it remains a nostalgic treat for many.
