7 Tips on How to Eat Where the Locals Eat

Get Lost and Look for Crowds

I always find myself lost and hungry when I’m traveling. Most of the time this happens far outside of tourist zones, and I don’t have the ability to follow any of the previous tips. In these instances, I simply look for the most crowded food stand or restaurant and eat there. If I can’t read the menu, I ask the server to surprise me.

This tip worked to my advantage on a recent trip to Barcelona. I was lost in the Gothic Quarter looking for a restaurant I found in a blog post comment. “Hanger” was about to kick in when I stumbled across a restaurant so full that it was standing room only. It was the best meal I ate in the culinary mecca that Barcelona has become, and it boasted no Michelin Stars.
