5. Clean out your bags or your car before you get to the border
Once you reach the border, you are responsible for anything found on your person, in your luggage, or in your vehicle. Before trying to cross the border, take a few moments to clean out your possessions to make sure that there’s nothing illegal lurking in there. It could be as innocuous as a Swiss Army knife that you carry around in your backpack all the time, or even a tiny amount of marijuana. Just because you forgot that it was in there doesn’t mean that you won’t be responsible for its existence once the border agents or their canine unit finds it.
