Best Bookish Places in London

Waterstones

Waterstones is the big British book chain, so it may have less independent spunk as some of the others on this list. But it’s still nice to visit, and especially nice to pop in at the branch on Gower Street. Incidentally, this happens to be Europe’s “largest academic/specialist range bookshop,” so that’s exciting if you’re in a mood for research!

This shop is four stories of bookish goodness, set in block of historic houses. Rare and antique books are kept in the basement, along with a “room less traveled” (where you can see a map marking other visitor’s origins, and you can pin your own!). There are (of course) numerous other rooms to investigate, and you may just find a hidden space all to yourself around one of the odd bends.

On the ground floor as you exit into Gower Street, you’ll pass a room full of books on sale, so don’t miss grabbing a bargain on your way out!
