11. Giving the peace sign – England
The “v” sign with two fingers up and palm facing the person in front of you the is generally understood to be the peace and love sign. In many countries, if you do it with the palm facing you, it means the same thing, but it’s very rude in England.
History tells us that during the war with France, English archers had those two fingers chopped off when captured. If they managed to escape unharmed, they’d lift the fingers to show their contempt to the French. Nowadays, it means you’re literally swearing at someone!
