12. Showing your open palms – Greece
When someone is coming towards you – or talking too much – and you want them to stop, you usually raise your hands with the palms facing the person. People generally understand they need to stop what they’re doing, but in Greece it means something else.
It’s said that during the Byzantine times, criminals had to walk the streets and people could smear excrement on their faces with an open palm. So nowadays, the gesture is considered to be very offensive.
