6 Outstanding Houses to See in Old Town San Diego
3. Casa de Estudillo
This place is the most famous adobe-block townhouse of Old Town San Diego, so be sure to check it out and take some time to explore it. It was the property of one of the 19th century’s most distinguished families and served as a social and religious center all along the Mexican and early American periods. It was built between 1827 and 1829 by the commander of the San Diego presidio, Captain Jose Maria de Estudillo (born in Spain). Jose Antonio Estudillo inherited the building in 1830, upon the commander’s death, and lived here with his family until 1887.
As early Californio families were pretty numerous, Casa de Estudillo features many bedrooms, a kitchen, a storage room, a work room, a dining room, a living room, a Catholic Chapel and a servants’ quarters. The building is enclosed around an inner courtyard, a romantic setting and an open gathering place for several events (parties, feast day celebrations, christenings).
