Nîmes
Nîmes is a moderately sized town located at the midpoint between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cévennes mountains. During the Roman empire, the town of Nîmes housed about 60,000 people, and the remnants of their houses, temples, and other buildings can still be seen today. The Arena of Nîmes was built in AD 70, and still stands in the very center of the town. The Square House is a Roman temple that was built in AD 19, and is one of the best preserved Roman temples in the world. Visit Nîmes in early spring, or fall, to catch the Camargue bullfights.
