Running deep beneath the cobblestone streets of Paris is a series of stone mines that hold the remains of nearly 6 million people. Known as “The World’s Largest Grave,” the catacombs were used to house the dead beginning in the 18th Century when the cemeteries around Paris began to overflow after centuries of war, disease and famine. Today only a small portion of the catacombs are open to the public, but some brave urban explorers known as “cataphiles” dare to venture beyond the entrance, despite the sign that heeds an eerie warning: “Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort.” (‘Stop! This is the Empire of the Dead”).
