Lake Baikal, Russia
Located in southern Siberia, Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world. At 25 million years old, it is also considered the world’s oldest lake, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Ecologically, one of the most interesting things about Lake Baikal is the fact that over 80% of the animals found in and around the lake are endemic, meaning that they are found only in Lake Baikal. Among these endemic animals is the Baikal seal, one of only three freshwater seal populations in the world. For those keen to see the spectacular beauty of the lake, and to explore the incredible biodiversity, summer in Siberia is probably your best bet.
