Festa del Redentore—or the Redeemer Festival—takes place every year on the third weekend of July in Venice. The festival celebrates the redemption of Venice from the 1576 Black Plague. When the plague was sweeping across Europe, the Doge of Venice promised that he would build a gorgeous new church and dedicate it to the Holy Redeemer if God spared Venice from the plague. Every year, the festival celebrates this promise fulfilled fireworks are set off along the lagoon and are doubled in splendor because of the reflection of the water. The best place to watch the fireworks is along the Giudecca and the Riva del Schiavoni.
