LOTR IRL: Sites of Tolkien’s Inspiration in England

Warwick Castle
Tolkien and his wife married in the town of Warwick in 1916 (let’s say it again: d’awwwww!). The Nordic architecture of the area is thought by some to have influenced Rohan’s capital, Edoras.
To see some prime examples of this style, visit the local 12th century castle. With its towers, dungeon, and excellent exhibits, the ties to Edoras—and even Minas Tirith—aren’t hard to see.
Volunteers in costume are always on hand to answer questions about life in the castle. There is a daily birds of prey demonstration that is well worth seeing. Check ahead for any big events happening while you’re there. In the summer, there are several large reenactments, including a medieval battle.
