Must-Dos on Inishmore, Aran Islands, Ireland

Shops

We traveled during the off season (in February), which meant most of the shops and restaurants were closed. A word to the wise, if you are traveling outside of the busy months (April-August): Bring a packed lunch! Once you leave the quay, the options for food become a bit scarce.

But even on a slow day, we were pleased to find ample opportunity to spend our money. There are several shops in the most populated part of the island, where the ferry drops you off, and these are great to browse while you’re waiting to catch a ride home.

The best shop we visited was a little cottage near Dún Aengus, next door to the only restaurant open while we were there. Everything inside was locally sourced, locally made. I splurged on a knitted Aran wool hat, and it remains one of my favorite purchases from my entire six months studying abroad.

That day in Inishmore remains one of my favorite memories of traveling abroad, even three years later. Definitely put it on your list if you’re in the County Clare area!
