For the most part, you have to escape the corporate tentacles of the bigger cities to find either style in its authenticity. For Western BBQ, head to Lexington, North Carolina. The town of roughly 19,000 boasts 17 BBQ restaurants. While many claim that the restaurant called Lexington Barbecue is the best, I suggest stopping in at a few.

Two restaurants come to mind as leaders for Eastern BBQ – Allen and Son in Chapel Hill and Skylight Inn in Ayden. Eastern BBQ tends to be more prevalent throughout the state instead of concentrated like Western is in the Lexington and Piedmont areas.
